SCIENCES

The Science Department studies vital questions like "What do the cooks make that meat loaf out of?" and "Do we really want to know?" "Can Engineering's home brew actually take rust off pipes?" and most importantly, "What is the probable frequency of appropriate shore leave places in our patrol sector?"

Actually, the role of Sciences is to provide in-depth knowledge on a wide variety of scientific subjects for whomever needs it. Departmental positions are divided into two categories: PHYSICAL SCIENCES and SOCIAL SCIENCES. Scientists tend toward either one broad discipline or specialize in one of the many branch disciplines. The following is a partial list of positions available in the Physical Sciences.

CHEMIST: studies the structure and properties of various substances and the changes they undergo (including the changes of home-brew through the digestive system of the more exotic crew members).

PHYSICIST: studies interactions between matter and energy. Includes such fields as acoustics, mechanics, electricity, optics, heat, magnetism, radiation, atomic structure, and nuclear reactions.

ASTRONOMER: studies stars, planets, comets, and other celestial bodies and interstellar phenomena

XENOBIOLOGIST: studies life processes of alien organisms. Often talks the Chemist into helping develop a new life form.

BOTANIST: studies life processes of plants. Sometimes meets a sentient plant with an attitude.

GEOPHYSICIST: studies the physical properties of planets. Includes the fields of Hydrology, Oceanography, Meteorology, Seismology, Vulcanology, Magnetism, radioactivity, and geodesy (planetary surveying).

The following is a partial list of positions available in Social Sciences.

ANTHROPOLOGIST: studies the physical and social aspects of a culture

ARCHEOLOGIST: studies artifacts of dead civilizations. Generally messes around until he activates some long-dead weapon of mass destruction.

LINGUIST: studies the structure and makeup of language. Programs the computer to recognize new languages, especially swear words.

HISTORIAN: studies the written records of civilizations

SOCIOLOGIST: studies societies, social institutions, and social relationships. Usually heavy into his/her/its own social relationship.

ETHNOLOGIST: studies myths, lore, legends, oral history, etc. of a culture

Crew members in Sciences work closely with other departments. A sociologist might accompany a landing party. a botanist might help Medical discover the medicinal properties of a certain plant. A physicist might help Engineering rig a shield to protect the ship against a specific type of radiation. Science needs intellectually curious recruits to help explore the new phenomena we encounter.
