INTRODUCTION

Welcome aboard the USS SOL NCC-1733! The crew of this starship meets on the first Friday of each month in the art room at the Mary Siah Recreation Center from 1900 - 2100 hours (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM). Meetings are canceled if the temperature is -30 F or colder at 1700 hours according to the US Weather Bureau (452-3353.) and on holidays when the facility is closed.

The purpose of this starship is to share the ideals set down in the Star Trek Universe as created by Gene Roddenberry. Trekkers believe in a future in which people of all cultures will live together in harmony: when humanity will eliminate hunger, hate, and disease, and celebrate, rather than fear, its diversity. To this end, membership in this Starship is open to Sentient Beings of any age from any planet.

Wearing a uniform is part of the fun of belonging to a starship. You may wear a uniform from any of the Star Trek series. A uniform is optional; however, please wear at least your rank pins or your communicator. Some crewmembers like to wear Star Trek T-shirts or their favorite alien costumes. When in uniform, follow the guidelines in the section UNIFORM GUIDELINES.

Many Trekkers like to create an alien character for themselves. Since the Trek Universe spans so many centuries, your character may be from any time period through the 24th Century. In establishing a "world" for your alien persona, keep in mind several things. Let your alien develop in time. Most starship officers are at least 30 years old, having been educated on their home worlds, graduated from Starfleet Academy (4 terms), and served on several ships while earning rank. The captains and admirals can be well over 50. And some species live many times longer than humans. Think through the culture, family, and home world of your alien. Design a civilian costume and make up native foods. You can choose an alien already "discovered" or invent your own. You may also be a human from earth, one of the colonies, or one of the civilizations created when the Preservers planted humans on other worlds early in Earth's history. Each colony would develop its own culture and follow its own lines of evolution, so be creative.

The 24 hour military clock is used to tell time. Military time begins at mid-night (0000 hours). Military time after 1259 (Noon): add 1200 to civilian time. (2:30 PM becomes 1430 hours). Trekkers use a stardate system to record date. YEARMONTH.DAY: (SEPTEMBER 19, 1992 becomes 9209.19.)

Promotions are earned by crew members who attend the meetings, participate in activities, wear at least their communicators or rank pins when "on duty", pass their departmental exams (given once during a crew member's career), show good ship's service (setting up booths, completing missions, getting involved in discussions, presenting new ideas to the Captain, etc), and exhibit good behavior on and off duty.

Among the past activities of the Starship were a Christmas Party, the North Pole Winter Carnival (bean-bag toss and dart booth), the KUAC Fund-raiser (we manned the telephones), Fleetmeet (a potluck featuring alien foods and make-up, costuming, and modeling classes), the Midnight Sun Festival, and a Halloween Party. Sometimes we get to do something really special: at the opening of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, we were invited to set up a display at the Goldstream Theater. We all were in uniform and displayed as much of our Trek Memorabilia as we could fit on the table and walls.

In the section SHIP ORGANIZATION you will find a description of each department on this starship. When you find a department and job you would like to be associated with, let the Captain or First Officer know so your name can be listed properly on the ship’s Database. If a job you have in mind is not listed, but could possibly be on a starship, contact the Captain or First Officer. Although some of us are Next Generation Fans, the Starship organization is based on the 23rd Century model (Movies) so keep this in mind when choosing a role.

At the end of this introduction is a copy of the meeting agenda. Since our Starship membership has gotten larger, it is necessary to follow a meeting format so that everyone gets a chance to speak and that Ship's business is taken care of before Recreation. At the present time, the USS Sol conducts its meetings online and its activities in person.
