RANKS

The two basic categories of rank are COMMAND and ENLISTED.

The ENLISTED are the technicians, the mechanics, the programmers, the clerks, the orderlies, the cooks, etc., who do the nitty-gritty work of keeping the ship running smoothly. Chiefs are the highest rank of the ENLISTED. (In the Trek Universe, Commissioned officers may also serve as Chiefs.) The following ENLISTED ranks are from a 20th Century Navy recruits' handbook, The Bluejacket Manual.

PO3: petty officer 3rd class

CPO: chief petty officer

PO2: petty officer 2nd class

SCPO: senior chief petty officer

PO1: petty officer 1st class

MCPO: master chief petty officer

A new member begins at the rank of PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS and works up the ranks. When the petty officer (any level) joins Starfleet, Int’l (the parent organization) and passes Starfleet's Officer's Training School, he/she/it will be promoted directly to ENSIGN.

COMMAND (Commissioned Officers) include the Chiefs of each department and their superior officers up the line to the Captain. Command extends beyond the ship to Starfleet Command: the Starfleet Technical Manual (Classic) contains a good Starfleet command tree. The following COMMAND ranks represent those used in the Trek Universe.

ENSIGN: a Starfleet graduate specializing in Command. Ensigns rotate duty among all departments to acquaint themselves with the entire ship. Ensigns spend their off-duty hours trying to get a date or trying to look old enough to get into a bar.

LIEUTENANT, JR. GRADE (Lt. J.G.): begins to specialize in one field of study and spends most duty hours in that department. Lt. J.G.'s don't HAVE any off-duty hours. Their social life is non-existent.

LIEUTENANT: becomes proficient in the department and may head up missions under the supervision of a superior officer. May have a date now and then if he/she/it survives the last trip to a dangerous planet.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER: begins to specialize in the Command duties of the department and is an expert in the field of study. Assists the Commander in saving the ship. Enjoys a pretty good social life when not helping save the ship.

COMMANDER: head officer of the department. Is often one of the main people who saves the ship from certain disaster by vigorously applying the department's full range of knowledge. Commanders may be assigned as department heads or line officers. Line officers may command several departments and report directly to the Captain. Commanders have GREAT social lives and take every opportunity to enjoy them before they become Captains. To become First Officer, the Commander must pass Starfleet's Officers' Command Course.

CAPTAIN: Gets all the credit for saving the ship. Also gets hung if the crew screws up. Usually gets invaded by a body-snatching alien and gets removed from command by the CMO (Chief Medical Officer.) Gets companionship only when the First Officer allows a beam-down. Captains who survive longer than their ships are court-martialed.

The FLAG RANKS in Starfleet, Int’l are FLEET CAPTAIN, COMMODORE, REAR ADMIRAL, VICE ADMIRAL, ADMIRAL AND FLEET ADMIRAL. A Starfleet member earns flag rank through service at the Regional and International level.

Starfleet Marines must follow the procedures of the STARFLEET MARINE CORPS (SFMC) to earn a Commissioned rank. Corporal through Colonel ranks are earned by service to the ship. Higher ranks are earned through service at the Regional and International level.

In addition to Starfleet ranks are civilian advisors and professionals that work with them. There are also AMBASSADORS from all the planets as well as governmental DELEGATES. The U.S.S. SOL may at any time be asked to transport these people to and from interplanetary meetings.
