For those who like their Star Trek on the military side, the Starfleet Marine Corps offers the Space Marine a home. SFMC is based loosely on the USMC.

The local branch of the SFMC is called a Marine Strike Group (MSG). MSG’s are grouped by state into a Battalion. Alaska is the First Battalion in a larger group called a Brigade. The Battalions in Alaska and Western Canada are in the 10th Brigade, which has the same boundaries as Region 10. Brigade 10 is grouped into a larger geographical area called Division 4.

Marines who join Starfleet and take the required classes at Starfleet Academy and TRACOM may become commissioned officers or NCO’s and may hold positions of responsibility at the local and Regional level. They may take classes at both Starfleet Academy and SFMC Academy. They also earn military-style ribbons for academic achievements and Corps and Community service.

Marines who are not Starfleet members may work up the ranks as in the civilian arm of the ship. Current USS Sol members who enlist in the SFMC may wear the Marine equivalent insignia of their Starfleet Rank. They do not earn military ribbons, nor may they take classes at SFA or SFMCA.

Service points and promotions are earned the same way as Starfleet points. The ship’s Captain approves all promotions on the ship, but the MSG Officer in Charge conducts the promotion ceremony.

RANKS and their insignia are somewhat different than the familiar Starfleet insignia. On this ship, for example, Marine officers’ pips are silver. There are no black pips. Pips change shape after Captain to diamonds and to stars in the General ranks. RANKS follow the USMC format, which is similar to the Army ranks. Enlisted Marines wear arm patches that display their ranks.

* Upper Sergeant ranks are distinguished by specialty pins on the rank patch and collar. Sgt Majors work at the Battalion level (Sergeant Major) at the Division or Brigade level (Command Sergeant Major) and at the International level (Sergeant Major of SFMC).

There are many variations of the Starfleet Marine uniform. All Marine uniforms on the USS Sol will include the black Beret. The 421^st working uniform is a red-top Voyager-style tunic over a black turtleneck and black slacks. For Marines who don’t have a Class B uniform, one can be put together with a plain black turtleneck or sweatshirt, black slacks or black jeans, and black tennis shoes. Officers’ pips will be worn on the turtleneck collar and Enlisted patches will be worn on the left sleeve. Black BDU’s and Class A uniforms are optional. The SFMC pin can be purchased from ship’s stores.

Wearing of unmodified real-life military insignia or ribbons on SFMC or Starfleet uniforms is strictly prohibited. Civil Air Patrol insignia may be worn, however, when awarded by the SFMC. The SFMC Marine Force Manual offers guidelines for uniforms, insignia and ribbons. Both the ship’s CO and the MSG OIC have a copy of the manual. You can download your own copy from www.sfi-sfmc.org.

The 421st MSG is the first Starfleet Marine group to be formed in Alaska and is attached to the USS Sol NCC-1733. Some of the duties of the 421st are ceremonial, such as presentation of colors (flags) at meetings and special events. Community service and Star Trek activities provide promotion opportunities. In role playing, Marine combat and tactical operations help us defeat the enemies of Starfleet.

4 21st’s main mission is Special Operations: reconnaissance, intelligence, strategic planning, hostage retrieval, vessel recapture and anything else secret and devious. This group also advises the Engineering and Security departments of needed stealth and weaponry upgrades to the ship.

The 421^st is also a Light Mecha unit, using weapons that can be carried or worn and commands a shuttlecraft.

The 421st is also home to an Omega Team (Starfleet Intelligence).

The official SFMC charity is Toys For Tots. The 421^st MSG operates TFT throughout the year, delivering toys for birthdays and other special occasions. The Marines collect, inspect and play with…er sort the toys for distribution to shelters in the area.
