NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS PURELY VOLUNTARY AND IS NOT REQUIRED BY EITHER SFI OR SFMC
Two First Class Stamps (or a 2 OZ stamp) will be sent along with each packet only if you want your certificates mailed. No other tuition is required. DO NOT SEND A SASE! I refuse to fold these certificates! This program may be administered entirely online. Just e-mail your forms. Your diplomas will be e-mailed to you. Upon earning a certificate for your PRIMARY BOS, you may purchase a streamer for your flag or guidon for your PRIMARY BOS. See the BOS/S Readiness Application. Link is at the bottom. See sample streamer below. INTRODUCTION In the ages before starships roamed space, the US Marine Corps required that each of its Marines pass a series of tests or drills in order to become certified for combat. A Starship, Space Station, or other Vessel would also pass inspection before it was put into service. This series of certifications is to be earned through the efforts of the entire Starfleet crew of a Starfleet Vessel, not just Marines. The purpose of this program is to combine the efforts of Starfleet crews taking Academy classes (SFA or SFMCA). In the past, members took classes individually for their own edification, receiving promotion points and/or ribbons for earning each diploma. (OTS and OCC were the only Academy courses that affected the entire Vessel.) The MURP is designed to provide a platform in which Starfleet members can pool their diplomas for the good of the Unit. APPLICATION PACKET The OIC of the Unit or a Designated Certification Officer should submit all applications for your Unit. You may apply to the MURP in four ways:
Return your Unit Profile with your first BOS/S Application. If by mail: return each Branch Application with TWO FIRST CLASS STAMPS (or a 2 oz. stamp). HOW IT WORKS Rather than one or two people taking all the classes, the entire Starfleet crew will fulfill the requirements by submitting copies of diplomas or confirmations from classes they took at Starfleet Academy (SFA) and Starfleet Marine Academy (SFMCA). OIC'S and CO'S may affirm the existence of the diplomas by e-mail or by mail. Applicants do not have to send copies of the diplomas. The word of the OIC that he/she has seen those diplomas, confirmations, or database entries is good enough.
Branch of Service/Specialty* Certificates include:
* Note: Starred listings are specialties and not official Branches of Service as outlined in the MFM. REQUIREMENTS: Note: "choice of one (or two) diploma(s) from" followed by a list of schools means that the crew must submit two DIFFERENT SFA or SFMCA diplomas from any of the listed classes or schools, in addition to the SFMCA courses listed. The diplomas must be from DIFFERENT courses. Commissioned Vessels with 10 or more Starfleet personnel: At least THREE different crew members must be working together to certify the Branch of Service. Shuttles with 5 or more Starfleet members but fewer than 10: At least TWO crew members must be working together to certify the Branch of Service. Preshuttles and outposts with fewer than 5 Starfleet members may certify the Branch of Service with ONE crewmember. It is expected that an MSG will certify in its official MOS. However, it is permissible for MSG's to certify in any or all MOS's. This program is meant to reward participation in both academies.
Diplomas and verifications
will be accepted from any campus (past or present) of SFA or SFMCA.
COMMON CONDITIONS
1. WE DON'T HAVE THAT BRANCH OF SERVICE OR SPECIALTY (BOS/S). A Unit does not need to certify a BOS/S it does not have. You may certify unmanned BOS/S's for future use, however. The unit has a Primary BOS, which it SHOULD certify (if the unit so desires.) Marines in your unit may want to certify secondary BOS/S's because they are interested in other Marine operations. 2. WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MEMBERS IN OUR UNIT. Diplomas may be submitted from members of all of a Vessel's crew to certify the SFMC Unit. This is a ship-wide effort, not just a Unit effort. If you are unaffiliated with any Vessel (MEU), the Flagship of your Brigade (Region) may help you certify. 3. WE CAN'T EARN THAT MANY DIPLOMAS! A required diploma or verification may be used to fulfill more than one certification. The ship does not have to earn diplomas for any class more than once. Just re-submit the diploma for each relevant certification the ship is applying for.
A good strategy is to collect all the copies of all the diplomas and
verifications earned by your Vessel's crew. Make about 3 copies
of each. Lay them out according to Branch of Service or Specialty and mix and match till you meet the requirements. The two diplomas may be used to certify DIFFERENT BOS/S's. For example: Two members took Starship Operations I . One diploma may be used to certify Armour and the other may be used to certify Combat Engineering. 5. ONE OR TWO MEMBERS CAN CERTIFY MOST OF THE DEPARTMENTS. Diplomas must be submitted from as many different members as possible. A Commissioned Vessel should have at least three different people working together to certify the Unit. (A shuttle should have at least two and a preshuttle may have one.) If at all possible, diplomas should come from several members. 6. WHAT ABOUT FORMER MEMBERS? Diplomas must have been earned by a current member of the ship or unit. The diploma is valid even if the member is no longer a Starfleet International member. If you have a valuable former member, it might be advantageous to get that person back on the duty roster, even if only by correspondence. 7. IS THERE A TIME LIMIT ON DIPLOMAS? Diplomas may have been earned at any time in the past, by any current member of the ship, from any department. (If a current ship member earned a diploma in 1979, then it is valid, whether or not the person is a current Starfleet member.) 8. A NEW ACADEMY CLASS IS NOT LISTED IN THE REQUIREMENTS. New Academy Classes crop up all the time. If you come across one that is not yet listed in the requirements, contact me and together we will decide where that class belongs. 9. HOW DO WE KEEP UP WHEN THE REQUIREMENTS KEEP CHANGING? You may update your Unit at any time. If the requirements change, you have a choice to keep the certificates you have or to update the certificates to meet the new requirements. 10. HOW DO WE UPDATE OUR CERTIFICATES? A Marine Unit may update its certificates as crew members rotate or the status of the Unit or the Vessel changes. The Unit does NOT have to start all over unless it has completely disbanded and reformed under a new Unit number. In such a case, a new Marine Unit Profile must be sent. If your Vessel OR Unit has restructured (added or lost departments and kept the same Unit number) and you want to update any of your certificates, submit an updated Marine Unit Profile and indicate which BOS/S's are being updated or added. 11. WE DON'T HAVE A MARINE UNIT YET, CAN WE CERTIFY A BOS ANYWAY? A Vessel whose members have taken SFMCA courses may certify a BOS for a FUTURE MSG. If the vessel has enough confirmations to certify under the MURP, it is highly suggested that an MSG be applied for through the SFMC. It takes only ONE marine to form a unit. 12. HOW DO WE GET A STREAMER? Once a unit earns its certification in its PRIMARY BOS, a streamer may be purchased for that BOS for $5.00. See the BOS/S Readiness Application for details. 13. CAN STREAMERS BE PURCHASED FOR OTHER THAN THE UNIT'S PRIMARY BOS? No. Making streamers is quite labor intensive and the proper-sized letters are not readily available. I have had to limit the production of streamers to PRIMARY BOS's only. I charge only the actual cost of materials, postage, and padded envelope. I shall continue to make these streamers as long as materials are available.
