Military Operations include the fighting forces (Marines), the troop carriers, the support vessels, the fighter squadrons, the battleships, and the escort vessels that make up the armed forces of Starfleet.

Milops leads the way in any large-scale combat situation.  When Starfleet vessels encounter  hostile forces it cannot handle, Milops steps in with the "big guns" to provide the fighting force needed to solve the situation.

Marines stationed on an armed vessel have two primary duties: to protect the vessel and to provide internal security to sensitive areas.

Marines called to combat duty are the first to arrive in a combat situation. They are the ones that take the first casualties, secure the area, and make it relatively safe for other Starfleet teams to enter.
